C276 - When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

The best heat exchangers have stood the test of time because of proper material planning.  In the heat exchanger industry, it is very important to minimize downtime and keep productivity at an optimal level.  Equipment is expected to perform well without excessive maintenance.

When performing maintenance, there are numerous variables to be addressed.  These include media, flow and tube shape. For aggressive aqueous media at elevated temperatures, consider Alloy C276.  The flow rate can impact corrosion rate, but it is typically not a concern with C276.  Velocity can become an issue when there is debris or contaminants in the media.  This can potentially cause corrosion to occur by providing areas for it to propagate.

Alloy C276 is a solid-solution-strengthened, nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with a small amount of tungsten. C276 offers excellent corrosion resistance in an assortment of harsh environments.  C276 can be utilized in heat exchangers in a variety of industries, including petrochemical and chemical processing, power generation, pharmaceutical, marine, and waste water treatment.

Alloy C276 has excellent resistance to pitting, stress-corrosion cracking and reducing conditions, and good resistance to mildly oxidizing atmospheres.  The amount of Molybdenum (Mo) and Chromium (Cr) are the variables here since more Cr will give better resistance to oxidizing environments by creating a protective oxide layer.  The Mo content will help determine the resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.  Alloy C276 also exhibits excellent resistance to corrosion by seawater especially under crevice conditions, which induce attack in other commonly used materials.
