Now a Mountain View, Calif. startup company called Filld is testing a service that lets owners of conventionally powered vehicles skip a trip to the filling station by delivering gas directly to their cars. Even better, depending on the model, this task can be accomplished completely in the background, so to speak, with the vehicle automatically calling the service to request a fill-up as needed.
At least for the time being, the program is limited to owners of select Bentley vehicles in the San Francisco Bay area, with the first delivery made back in July to a 2016 Flying Spur.
When a participating Bentley’s fuel supply reaches a quarter tank the car sends a signal to Filld, and the petrol is subsequently delivered by professionally-trained, commercially-licensed, and HAZMAT-certified drivers in DOT-certified trucks. Delivery personnel are able to pop open a car’s fuel-filler door remotely. Car owners, meanwhile, are able to monitor the process via their smartphones. We assume delivery times will vary based upon distance and demand, and will be accomplished only if the vehicle is parked in a reachable location or access is granted if it’s, say, parked in a garage.
