Alloy 22 is a Ni-Cr-Mo alloy (Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum) and is one of the most versatile corrosion resistant alloys used in industry today. The amount of Ni in the alloy helps against stress corrosion cracking particularly in chlorides and caustics. The Cr in the alloy helps with high temperature oxidation and improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The Mo adds to the corrosion resistance against reducing media as well as offers improvements to high temperature strength.
With these combined powers, this alloy provides resistance to environments which outperform its counterparts. It has shown a better resistance to sensitization as seen by the ASTM G28 test.
Alloy 22 is used in applications where aggressive aqueous solutions are present. Halides (chlorides and fluorides), seawater, oxidizing and reducing acids are just some of the environments which this alloy can be used in and are what make it so versatile.
